Library Support

Background
  • The town of Mpulungu had no library or any access to books form 1998 - when Mpulungu became a distric and all the library books that existed up to then were moved to Mbala (a town 40 km away) - until May 2007 - when the library project was launched.
  • Very little publications are currently available in the local dialects, Mambwe, Lungu and Bemba.

Library

  • The libary opened in May 2007 and at the moment contain about 600 christian books, as well as another 70 general topic & educational books that have been donated.
  • The libary is located at Mpulungu Civic Centre, Walamo Hall, Niamkilo Road, Mpulungu District, Zambia and serves Mpulungu Township and district as a whole - with around 10, 000 readers - of which 70% are children.
  • The Mpulungu District Councel has provided a librarian to work in the library(opening hours are from 8am to 5pm)

Focus of Project

  • To provide positive reading material in English, as well as the local dialects
  • To impact children in a positive way
  • To provide material for use in school assignments
  • To promote a reading culture in the society
  • To expand the worldview of the children & youth

Support Required

We are in need of the following items for the Library:

  • Books (especially children books)
  • encyclopedias
  • dictionaries
  • atlases
  • education books (covering subjects like English, Science, Geography and Mathematics)
  • fiction books
  • non-fiction books
  • games (chess, checkers, videos, puzzles, ect.)
  • videos

The game and uplifting videos are used on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during pre-arranged game times for the children and youth.
